ANTONIO E' COSTA - 1942: Antonio E' Costa is a multi-faceted artist worked with architecture, urban designing and paper making. His unique style includes a painterly mark-making process of playing with textures of various materials. He creates motifs and designs which are articulated through the manipulation of mixed media, unravelling a world of forms and textures.
First a painter, but also architectural and urban designer and paper maker, Antonio was born in Nairobi, Kenya, the third generation of a Goan family of writers and artists. Growing up in Africa, he was educated there, with a Cambridge School Certificate; a degree in Town Planning from Nairobi, Kenya and obtained his BFA from the University of Calgary, Calgary; Master of Environmental Studies Program from York University, Toronto; Woodworking, Ontario College of Art and Design. Antonio did other studies in the UK and at the University of Lisbon, Portugal. He is a Canadian citizen, living in India for many years now and speaks many languages. Travelling extensively, he has participated in workshops, been commissioned to plan towns, to create murals and has shown widely in solo and group shows in all parts of the world – in Canada, France, Mexico, Morocco, Greece, India, Italy, Brazil and USA. He has given lectures and demonstrations at various locations worldwide, on his work. Awards and Grants include Alliance Francaise, Pondicherry, India (1999); Canadian High Commission, Zimbabwe (1990,1989); Canada Council (1984); Kenya Society of Arts & Crafts (1966); Delfina Studio Trust, Art Residency, Spain (1996). His more recent solo shows include at Gallery Sumukha, Bangalore (1997); The Fine Art Company, Mumbai (1999,2000); Fundacao Oriente, Goa (2003); La Parete Gallery, Toronto (2004); Jamaat, Mumbai (2004). His works are inprivate, public and corporate collections in Angola, Australia, Botswana, Canada, Denmark, England, France, Germany, Japan, Kenya, Morocco, Scotland, USA, Zimbabwe, Spain and India. Antonio lives and works in Goa at this time.
